The Group reported a LBT of US$13,597,000 for the year ended 31 March 2024, as compared to last year’s PBT of US$1,707,000 despite the increase in turnover. The loss mainly resulted from the provisions for impairment losses of certain plant and machinery and intangible assets totalling US$8,064,000 (2022/2023: nil). The Group’s LBT and the aforesaid provisions was US$5,533,000, 424.1% below last year’s PBT of US$1,707,000. The decline in result was primarily attributed to the decrease in revenue from the publishing and printing segment, partly compensated by cost savings, especially labour costs, paper costs and sales-related expenses. The management will continue to closely monitor the economic and political developments, adopt a cautious and prudent approach to cost management and ensure operational efficiency and effectiveness in all business units.

This resulted in the Group achieving a profit before income tax of US$2,028,000 which was a notable improvement from a profit before income tax of US$127,000 recorded in the immediate preceding quarter.

The Group recorded a profit before income tax of US$127,000 for the current quarter, as opposed to a loss before income tax of US$199,000 in the immediate preceding quarter. This was mainly attributed to improved performance of the travel segment and the receipt of subsidies under Hong Kong government’s “2022 Employment Support Scheme”.

The decline in turnover resulted in the Group reporting a loss before income tax of US$199,000 for the current quarter, as opposed to a profit before income tax of US$2,351,000 in the immediate preceding quarter. In the current quarter, despite the boost from Lunar New Year festive advertising, the increase in COVID-19 infections caused by the new Omicron variant dampened retail spending and economic growth. In addition, the Group had to face the challenge of rising newsprint cost during the quarter.

  5. BURSA MALAYSIA

The Group’s profit before income tax rose 33.4% to US$2,351,000 for the quarter in review mainly attributed to the improvement in the Malaysian operations’ performance. This was mainly due to a 27.7% increase in turnover from its publishing and printing operations in Malaysia where economic activities have started to resume in the last quarter of 2021 following the easing of lockdown measures.

Despite the decline in turnover, the Group recorded an 88.2% increase in its profit before income tax to US$2,604,000 from US$1,384,000 for the immediate preceding quarter. This was mainly attributed to cost savings and fair value gains from the revaluation of the Group’s investment properties in Malaysia.
