CGS-CIMB has “overweight” ratings on bank, healthcare, gaming, oil and gas, electronics manufacturing services (EMS), media and rubber gloves sectors, and “underweight” ratings on chemicals and transport. The research house said in a report that it likes the bank, gaming, oil and gas, EMS and media sectors for exposure to a recovering economy post-Covid-19. It also refreshed its top three to five stock picks for the various themes it has identified for 2021 which include Genting Bhd in laggard plays and tourism recover plays.

Shares in both Genting Bhd and its 49.45%-owned hilltop casino operator Genting Malaysia Bhd (GenM) surged to a high in more than four months, following a strong sequential recovery in Genting Singapore’s (GenS) earnings for the third quarter (3Q) ended Sept 30, 2020. Rakuten Trade Sdn Bhd research vice-president Vincent Lau told theedgemarkets.com that the uptrend of these counters was due to them being a “recovery play” as well as progress in the development of a Covid-19 vaccine and GenS’ 3Q results.

Fitch Ratings has downgraded the long-term issuer default ratings of Genting Bhd and its wholly-owned subsidiaries Genting Overseas Holdings Ltd and Resorts World Las Vegas LLC (RWLV) to ‘BBB’ from ‘BBB+’, with a stable outlook. The downgrade reflects Fitch’s expectation that recovery from the Covid-19 pandemic will be slower than initially forecast, in particular for Singapore, which relies on international tourism, as borders are likely to remain shut for the rest of 2020 and continued social distancing measures constrain visitor volumes.

A loss before taxation of RM1,660.2 million was recorded for the current quarter compared with a loss before taxation of RM218.2 million in the preceding quarter. The higher loss was due mainly to the LBITDA suffered by the Leisure & Hospitality segment in the current quarter compared with an adjusted EBITDA in the preceding quarter. These were partially mitigated by lower impairment losses in the current quarter.
